Katherine let the last drop of warm vanilla coffee slide down her throat before hinting to the waitress that she wanted another cup. She didn't take in the habit of drinking caffeine during evening hours but with her work being a bit slow she needed a little pick me up. Her smoking habit had been cut back and that was hard enough for her to do. The coffee shop wasn't too overcrowded with people tonight therefore her intentions were not to attract a man. She dressed in jeans, converse tennis shoes, and a gray long sleeved shirt she had purchased from American Eagle. Her dark brown hair hung down with waves that framed her face. She was lucky enough to find a window seat and was amazed how there were a few Christmas decorations already up.
Bret really should have an IV attached to his arm complete with a caffeine drip, with all the caffeine the guy consumed. This was his fourth cup today. He had two in the morning over a client meeting, one at lunch and now he was feeling the urge for another one after his workout. Luckily, this coffee place was right down the block from his condo. In the middle of catching up on the past two episodes of The Walking Dead, he decided he wanted another cup and maybe a scone. He missed the scones in London where he was this past summer, and these were the closest thing he could find to the real deal. Wearing jeans, boots, t shirt and over that a gray Michael Kors cashmere and wool cardigan, he made his way down the street, the Boston air chillier than what he was used to. Chicago was windy, but Boston has a crisp coolness that didn't seem to go away. Luckily he had a scarf around his neck and finally he was inside the warmth of the cafe. He glanced around at the crowd, tucked his hands in his front pockets and waited for the line to dwindle. As he waited he eyed the crowd again and noticed an attractive woman near the window. Ok....he wasn't here to meet anyone. He was here for a carryout but when it was his turn to order he ordered it "for here" and made his way where the tables were and set his tray down at a small bistro table right next to hers. He smiled, sat facing her and untied his scarf. "Hey." Was all he said. He was just being friendly.
"Hi." She said. Out of all the days for the male species to even approach her it had to be the day where she looked like a bag lady. If this was a Friday night at a nice lounge she would look totally different. Katherine was almost shocked he looked her way given that she thought her appearance was unattractive at the moment. What was she going to say "Sorry I don't usually look like this." That wouldn't have worked but Katherine just had to deal with it. "I can't believe how cold it's gotten." This was just her attempt to make conversation with him since there wasn't a ton of people around and he did seem nice.
He picked apart his scone while she answered and the first thing he noticed was her eyes. Blue as all hell and drew him right in. "Yeah it has," he popped a piece of scone into his mouth and right then his phone buzzed on the table, startling him almost. He picked it up and dropped it into the pocket of his hoodie. "What aren't you used to the cold?" Bret asked. He wasnt sure what else to say and talking about the weather was your typical old stand by when it came to conversation. Can't knock it though, it was a simple way to talk.
"I am, It's just that I'm not a huge fan of it." Aside from the holiday season Katherine didn't take a likely to the cold weather seasons. It just mean having to deal with ice, snow storms, and the likely hood of catching the dreaded flu. She preferred it to be not too hot and not too cold. She always seemed to come down with some illness around this time but so far she was doing pretty good. She took a sip of her coffee before speaking again. "You from around here? I don't think I've seen you before."
Bret had lifted his mug and took a sip, nodding in agreement. "Ah okay," he assumed that meant she was from Boston or at least the area. "Actually no, just moved here about a month or so ago from Chicago. Cold there too, but this is a different kind of cold." He sipped again and then set his mug down, "I'm Bret by the way. And you are?"
"Katherine." She replied once again with a smile. She had only been to Chicago a few times back when Roxanne was living there along with the rest of her family. It had been so long ago she barely remembered the city at all but he was right about the weather being cold there. That she did recall. "I've been to Chicago a couple of times. My cousin lived there before moving here."
